What is So Special About This Spice Mix?
Since 1736, Shichimi spices have been produced and enjoyed for generations. Even earlier than that, the makers of this spice have maintained a shop in the area of Zenkoji Temple, a famous, non-sectarian Buddhist temple founded in the 7th century in Nagano. Visitors to this temple have long been purchasing the spice as a souvenir or as "proof" that they visited the famous temple.
Unlike the traditional Shichimi Spice mix, however, in this blend, yuzu is added. Yuzu is a rare type of citrus fruit that can only be harvested in a small region of Japan and Korea. Commonly used in Japanese cuisine, much in the way that lemons and grapefruits are used in western cuisine, it produces rich zest and fragrant aroma in various dishes.
